How To Become A Certified Access Specialist (CASp)

Many people ask "how can I become a Certified Access Specialist (CASp)”?

First and foremost, the state’s CASp examination is administer through the Division of State Architect (DSA). You must complete a candidate eligibility application form online at DSA CASp Registration or you can down load a snail mail application form (DSA-600) and start your process to "qualify" to take the examination. The qualification process is very important and is very similar to a job application. The qualification process looks at your experience, education or both in the areas of access compliance and application. This may come from design, construction, inspection, plan review, consulting, or other related fields.

It is best to approach the registration process and application like a job application to increase your chances of being approved. Like with any application, incomplete or pertinent information missing may hinder your chances of being approved.

The best source of information and the different ways to qualify, is the DSA CASp Handbook. You can download it here: CASp Handbook. Please direct any inquiries about the registration requirements to CASprogram@dgs.ca.gov or call 916.445.8100.

CASp examination test dates for 2011 have not been announced yet, but you can still submit your registration and get the ball rolling so you are ready to go once they do!

DOJ has issued final rules that revise (1) its Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) title II regulation covering nondiscrimination on the basis of disability in state and local government services; and (2) the regulation that implements title III of the ADA relating to nondiscrimination on the basis of disability by public accommodations and in commercial facilities. Both rules take effect March 15, 2011. For more information read the factsheets that describe the major changes in the rules revising title II and title III. California Architects 5 hour Online Disability Access Course Now Available!

CalCasp is now offering a 5 hour disabled access course! This online course is a viable option to fulfill the SB 1608 disability access continuing education requirement for license renewal with the California Architects Board.

Before taking our online course, please keep in mind:

The architect is required to turn in the Coursework Provider Documentation Form along with her/his application to renew the license – CalCasp does not turn in the form.

This form is available in PDF printable format at the completion of the course and contains specific information about the course provider and architect, and must be filled out completely and accurately for it to be accepted by the California Architects Board.

All California Architects must complete 5 hours of continuing education in disability access in order to renew their California license in 2011.

This will be a closed book examination in a multiple choice format. There will be 100 questions on the exam. The length of the examination is 2.5 hours.

Applicants who have an approved application with the CASp program will be able to register for an examination. Applications are accepted on a continuous basis with no set deadline, but if the intention is to sit for this August exam, any applications towards the August exam should be turned into our office no later than 5pm, July 9, 2010, so that these applications can be processed in time for examination registration. Any applications received after July 9, 2010 will be rolled over for the next available examination.

Exam registration is now open, but will close at 5 p.m. July 12, 2010.

Seating for the exam is limited. Registration is on a first come, first serve basis.

Examination dates, sessions and locations are subject to change. Should changes take place, they will be posted to this site, and all registered candidates will be notified.

Future exam dates will be posted when available.

The nice thing about this product is that it can be installed after the concrete is placed to allow for the application of the detectable warnings to the specific location where required. The court of appeals affirmed summary judgment for defendant on the ground that the term "instrumentality of a State" referred to governmental units or units created by them, and defendant private corporation was not a public entity merely because it contracted with a public entity to provide some service.
